The Brad "Cubanito" Wright Scholarship FundThe Campus Alliance of La Raza (CALR) - The Latino Student Union at the University of Delaware - is part of a network of college student organizations that works closely with The National Council de La Raza (NCLR) to increase youth leadership and advance positive social change on University campuses, in Latino communities, and throughout the United States. The CALR rests on two important pillars: 1) Advocacy in Pursuit of the Advancement of the Latino Agenda and 2) The Intellectual and Social Development of its Members.
Individuals who successfully circumvent stereotypical societal expectations contribute to La Raza's movement in several ways: 1) by reducing poverty and discrimination while increasing life opportunities for Latinos and other minorities, 2) by empowering the Latino community, primarily through individual social and intellectual development, 3) by supporting the establishment and strengthening of community institutions and 4) by improving the Latino community's public image in the United States.
La Raza encourages youth to pursue education and reject the ideals associated with opposition culture, i.e. that academic excellence is equivalent to "selling out" or "acting white". It encourages youth to act in ways that will benefit other minorities, especially Hispanics, socially and economically. The movement strives to blur the clear correlation that associates poverty and ignorance with minority populations. The ideology associated with this movement parallels WEB Du Boise's idea of the "Talented Tenth".
Brad "Cubanito" Wright was a 16 year old boy filled with love who aspired to attend the University of Delaware and pursue a career in Accounting. Like any kid, he enjoyed playing video games, hanging out with friends, and spending time with his family. He was a hard worker, doing well in school and studying hard for the SAT, all while maintaining a job at a Pizzeria to help out with expenses at home. His drive, passion, and dedication would have taken him well beyond any socially imposed limits. He avoided drugs, gangs, and violence and instead dedicated his short life to La Raza, improving himself socially and intellectually while helping others meet their goals.
On November 12, 2004, our little Cuban's life was cut short. In the midst of our pain, we are establishing a scholarship fund in his name. His dream of attending the University and having a lasting impact on his community will be a reality for other minority students, giving them the opportunity to make it out of the barrio and into leadership positions at institutions of higher education.
At least one student who demonstrates leadership, academic excellence, a commitment to community service, and/or the ability to overcome physical or social barriers will be awarded a scholarship amount of up to $500.00, which may be used for any expenses associated with attending leadership development conferences around the country.
